Thinking Biblically About Mathematics
This video series views mathematics with our eyes fixed on Christ. We open with a discussion on mathematics as a discipline of study. Starting at the beginning in Genesis 1, we see that God spoke light and creation—and the deeply rich mathematics behind it all—into existence. Mathematics, then, can be understood as a language God has graciously given us access to, allowing us to see a special way in which His glory is on display. Learning and exploring this language necessarily requires a certain amount of effort and determination, and so we proceed to discuss mathematics as a vocation. What do mathematicians do? And how should we think about this line of work from a biblical perspective? We address these questions and more in this two-part video series.
About this Series
This video series views mathematics through that lens, with our eyes fixed on Christ. We open with a discussion on mathematics as a discipline of study.
Ep. 1 Mathematics as a Discipline
In Genesis 1:1–2, God spoke light and creation into existence, and a great deal of mathematics is packed into that initial creative act. In this video, we will see that mathematics is much more than a set of procedural rules and formulas, but rather can be understood as a language God has graciously given us access to, allowing us to see a special way in which His glory is on display in creation. We also emphasize the sufficiency of Scripture in thinking about this discipline of mathematics.
Ep. 2 Mathematics as a Vocation
Learning the language of mathematics—and becoming fluent in it—requires a certain amount of effort and determination, and so in this video we discuss mathematics as a vocation. What do mathematicians do? And how should we think about this line of work from a biblical perspective? In short, a mathematician is an explorer of part of God's creation, and in this episode we see that the Christian mathematician simply seeks to be a faithful steward of the work God has given him or her to do, while relying on Christ in prayerful dependence for that work.
